Stone Tiger

Length 28 cm, width 8.88 cm, height 20.03 cm

Made of serpentine, the artifact is grayish-black with abundant white streaks resembling tiger stripes. The tiger is depicted in a recumbent posture with its head raised and mouth wide open. Its muzzle is square, with each corner featuring a large triangular canine tooth. Both the upper and lower jaws are carved with four incisors (with the side view showing three on each jaw), and a small drilled hole appears at the rear sides of the mouth. On either side of the tiger's forehead, there are five incised whisker lines, accompanied by two eyeshaped motifs and triangular, cloudlike ears with four parallel lines carved between them. The neck is straight and the head and neck is exaggeratedly large relative to the body. The front paws extend forward, while the hind paws lie curved on the ground. A small hole on the hip and two grooves divide the hip into six parts. This fierce and vigorous sculpture is a rare masterpiece of the stone carving art during the Shang and Zhou dynasties.
